Whether you’re considering abortion, adoption, or parenting, you should have an ultrasound before making a decision. An ultrasound reveals valuable pregnancy information and can help you determine the next steps.

What is an Ultrasound?

At Today’s Choice Women’s Center, our ultrasounds confirm key information about your pregnancy’s viability (whether it has a heartbeat and is progressing normally), gestational age (how far along you are), and location (whether it’s in the uterus or elsewhere).

There are two types of obstetric ultrasounds.

An abdominal ultrasound is noninvasive. During this type of scan, a gel is applied to your abdomen. The transducer moves over this area, and an image is produced.

A transvaginal ultrasound is typically performed in early pregnancy. The provider will insert a wand-like device called a transducer that has had gel applied to it gently into your vagina. This transducer creates sound waves that produce an image on a screen.

Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?

Making a decision without having had an ultrasound means you won’t know key details about your pregnancy. An ultrasound reveals the following information:

  • Viability: Knowing whether your pregnancy has a heartbeat and is progressing is crucial. Up to 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, which may require treatment and should always be monitored.
  • Gestational age: Determining how far along you are in your pregnancy will help inform you of your options.
  • Location: Healthy pregnancies grow in the uterus. Sometimes, an ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants in a location outside the uterus, such as a fallopian tube. This condition is dangerous and requires treatment.

Ultrasounds help protect your health and provide the details you need to move forward confidently.
